Hi! I'm a crafter and illustrator studying at Parsons. With a transient upbringing, I experienced many cultures at a young age- pursuing art studies in Europe led to my first show at the age of 15. Since my debut, I continue to work as a freelance illustrator and craft maker.
I use craft mediums and other traditional art materials such as paint and stop-motion animation to create objects and stories. Being raised in a small, international community, I largely attribute my interest in these mediums to small-town life in the Netherlands, leading me to learn knitting, felting, and ceramics. My process includes layers of influence and thought from external sources. It begins with research into a topic by sketching while listening to auditory stimulation (such as music, lectures, or audiobooks) related to a topic, emotion, or event. Then, I take each of these snippets and reapply them to a new medium and place them in a new order. These motifs begin to take a life of their own and act as their own symbology in the context of my memories and work. Once my sketches have been developed, I begin prototyping by swatching materials, making colour palettes, and ultimately beginning construction. My pieces are like an imagined collage behind my eyes when I try to fall asleep. Like cracking open my skull and peering into my dreams, often translating into the whimsical imagery and symbolism. Interested in translating abstract thought into visual language; I focus my work on my own memories of pain, loss, and longing as well as devotion and unconditional love to create sometimes eerie, sometimes colourful, work.
I am currently New York based. I am open for commission, please contact my email: [email protected] for inquiries.
Or, you can follow my journey @doovdles to see the latest updates on my thesis!
